Compare image files

Compare file bytes and browser-decoded sRGB RGBA with explicit conditions.

18 October 2026 · Check AI Free

Two distinct comparisons

Compare file bytes and decoded pixels

SHA-256 and an exact byte check compare the original files. A separate browser decode compares native-size sRGB RGBA. Different metadata or compression can change the file bytes without changing every displayed pixel.

Read the fixed pixel comparison policy

Chromium first release. Compare native-size, 8-bit Canvas sRGB RGBA after applying valid EXIF orientation exactly once (missing EXIF uses 1; XMP orientation is ignored). The decode copy removes EXIF and XMP after reading EXIF orientation; other container color chunks and embedded ICC profiles are retained for the browser color pipeline. Alpha is compared; RGB under alpha=0 is normalized to zero because Canvas cannot retain hidden transparent RGB. Partially transparent colors may be quantized by Canvas. No resizing, compositing over a background, perceptual similarity, sensor-pixel comparison or provenance verification. Animation and multi-picture JPEG are rejected. Limits per image: 20 MiB, 16 million pixels, 8192 pixels per side and 4096 container units. A structural inspection limit leaves remaining structure unknown; observed damage remains a separate failure.

Initial browser scope: Chromium. Safari and Firefox have not been checked. Previews scale to fit the page; the comparison and difference PNG use native dimensions. Input files remain unchanged.

Supported files and output

Compare original hashes/bytes separately from native-size Canvas sRGB 8-bit RGBA. Valid EXIF is applied once; XMP orientation is ignored. Alpha is compared, with hidden RGB under zero alpha normalized to zero and partial-alpha quantization declared. No resizing or background compositing. Per image: 20 MiB, 16 million pixels and 8192 pixels per side. Animation/multi-picture inputs are refused; decode failures preserve byte results. Browser acceptance is limited to Chromium; Safari and Firefox have not been checked. This is not perceptual similarity or sensor-pixel comparison.

Read the result with its coverage

Stored fields can be edited, copied or removed. A successful read describes the selected file’s supported containers; missing fields cannot be recovered from its pixels. A damaged or unsupported container has its own result. Review private values before copying or sharing a report.

These file operations run locally. The separate image checker can send file-header data and a reduced image copy for a model reading. Read the method and limitations when that is the task you need.
