Practical guide
Find out what a missing PNG parameters result does and does not mean
A missing parameters field describes the file you have now. Compare a known original with one documented local transformation, then use the actual reading state to decide whether to ask for an original, inspect other text or stop an unsupported read.

First determine whether the PNG was read
Use the local PNG reader on the exact file you received. A valid PNG with no text is an empty result; a valid PNG with other text but no parameters is a different inventory. A wrong signature, damaged CRC, unavailable decompression capability or exceeded processing limit is a failed or unsupported read. None of those failures proves that generation settings were absent.
Ask how the file was obtained: original save, downloaded preview, screenshot, editor export or a cleaning copy. Those roles guide your next step, but the current bytes alone do not identify which application or service removed a field. Do not assign a platform-specific stripping history without that process evidence.
- Read the exact PNG you have — Keep reader status and text occurrences alongside the file's known role.
- Inspect actual chunk structure — Locate stored text and CRC/boundary diagnostics without guessing missing values.
Reproduce one documented local removal
Step 1
Read the metadata-present original
Download a1111.png and choose it in the PNG reader. Expect five fields: Author, Software, parameters, workflow and prompt. Its parameters field has 159 characters and seed 9223372036854775807. Save that field if you need a before record.
Step 2
Choose an explicit local removal policy
Open the metadata remover and select the same file. Check PNG text, leave the ICC choice at its displayed setting, and review the other category choices. Click Remove selected metadata, then Download cleaned file. This is a documented whole-text-container cleanup, not a generic claim about screenshots or every editor export.
Step 3
Reopen the actual saved output
Choose your download in the PNG reader and chunk inspector. For this defined source, all five text chunks are gone; IHDR, the original IDAT and IEND remain. The reader reports no embedded text, and the structure has three chunks. text-removed.png below is the deterministic reference output for the same whole-text removal.
- Download the self-authored parameters PNG — Project-authored 1 × 1 PNG with five text fields: Author, Software, parameters, workflow and prompt. The 159-character parameters text contains the exact seed 9223372036854775807; this is a format fixture, not an A1111 generation.
- Download the defined text-removed comparison — Generated from the same source by a stated local chunk-copy operation. Its original IDAT is retained; it is not a social-platform upload result.
Use the result to choose a next step
| What you actually observe | What remains uncertain | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Valid PNG, no text fields | Whether metadata was never saved or was removed in an unknown earlier process | Request an original output or a separately saved parameters/workflow file from the provider. |
| Other PNG text, but no parameters | Whether settings exist under a different supported or unsupported representation | Read the actual fields; for workflow/prompt JSON use the ComfyUI reader. |
| A known local cleaned/exported copy | Only the effects of the documented operation are established | Keep the original/output roles and the removal policy with the reports. |
| Screenshot or preview is all that you have | Earlier generation text may not have been copied into these new bytes | Ask for the original file; no missing values are filled from visible pixels. |
| Signature, CRC, decompression or limit failure | The presence/absence of all original fields was not successfully established | Obtain an intact supported original, smaller input or a browser with the required capability. |
Test other-text and true-empty controls
Use prompt-only.png in the PNG reader. It contains one 185-character API prompt field and no A1111 parameters or UI workflow field. This shows that missing parameters does not mean missing metadata. Open it in the ComfyUI from-image tool to inspect its supported API representation.
empty.png contains no text at all. Neither control causes the reader to recover a negative prompt, seed or model from dimensions. Saved metadata can be edited, so even a present parameters field is not a signed statement of how the image was created.
The tools read PNG text up to 10 MiB, 32 fields, 256 KiB per field and 1 MiB decoded total, with separate embedded JSON bounds. They do not cover every media format or every custom metadata representation. The same original/actual-output comparison is needed if you investigate a real editor's save behavior; one local cleaning exercise does not measure that editor or a social platform.
- Download the one-field API-prompt PNG — Same self-authored pixels; only the original prompt chunk remains, after IDAT.
- Download the PNG without stored text — A defined metadata-free version of the same project-authored 1 × 1 pixels. No parameters or workflow are inferred from its image data.
- Official ComfyUI workflow metadata documentation — Explains the distinct workflow and prompt fields and why save settings or later file rewrites can affect their presence. Documentation checked 18 October 2026; this site's reader supports PNG text, not every documented media format.

Continue with your file
- Read a known metadata-present original — One public historical PNG and a separate exact-seed fixture.
- Inspect a different stored representation — workflow and API prompt are separate from A1111 infotext.
- Keep platform evidence and local transforms separate — Missing fields in a received copy do not identify an undocumented upload process.
